Militant killed in Indian-controlled Kashmir gunfight

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- A militant was killed Saturday in a gunfight with government forces in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight broke out at village Larnoo of Anantnag district about 65 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A militant was killed today in a gunfight with joint contingents of police and army in Larnoo village here," a senior police official posted in Anantnag said. "The gunfight started early in the morning."

According to officials, the area was cordoned off following specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of militants.

The government forces have not suffered any damage in the stand-off.

"The firefight has ended. However, the search operation is still underway," the police official said.

According to police, the identity of the slain militant was being ascertained. Enditem
