SANTIAGO, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chile has performed the highest number of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests in Latin America, Health Minister Enrique Paris said on Saturday.

While presenting a report on the country's fight against COVID-19, Paris said that 3,857,820 PCR tests have been carried out so far, averaging out at 196,660 tests per million inhabitants, which is "close to developed countries."

This was achieved through improvements made in the country's testing, traceability and isolation strategy, Paris said.

The Health Ministry reported on Saturday 1,811 new cases of COVID-19 and 59 more deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the national death toll to 13,588. Enditem
