Live COVID-19 updates: India's total infections near 7.5 mln

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 7,494,551 on Sunday even as 61,871 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest federal health ministry's data.

As many as 1,033 deaths since Saturday morning took the death toll to 114,031.

QINGDAO -- An asymptomatic coronavirus carrier in the Chinese city of Qingdao was discharged from hospital on Saturday, the municipal health commission said Sunday.

The carrier is one of the two stevedores who had handled imported frozen seafood at the port of Qingdao and were diagnosed as asymptomatic COVID-19 cases on Sept. 24. The other carrier was diagnosed as a confirmed case on Oct. 14.

BERLIN -- Germany's COVID-19 cases rose by 5,587 to 361,974 over the past 24 hours, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases said on Sunday.

The death toll from the disease went up by 10 to 9,777, the RKI added.

Germany recorded on Saturday 7,830 new infections of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the highest daily spike since the pandemic began.

COLOMBO -- The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has approved 966 million U.S. dollars worth of loans under a relief program for COVID-19 affected businesses, local media reported on Sunday.

A total of 61,907 applications for loans under the Saubagya COVID-19 Renaissance facility has been approved according to an official statement issued by the CBSL's Regional Development Department.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil registered 461 new deaths from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 153,675, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.

The ministry said that 24,062 more cases were registered, bringing the nationwide count to 5,224,362.

JERUSALEM -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in Israel rose to 302,770 on Saturday after the addition of 874 new cases, marking a fifth consecutive day of decrease in the number of daily new cases, Israel's Ministry of Health said.

The death toll rose to 2,190, with 49 new fatalities, while the number of patients in serious condition decreased from 714 to 690, out of 1,210 patients currently hospitalized.

PARIS -- France reported 32,427 COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, a new high of daily tally, according to the data released by the Public Health Agency on Saturday.

The previous daily record, at 30,621 cases, was set on Thursday. Enditem
