Live COVID-19 updates: Netherlands reports 8,015 new COVID-19 infections

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

THE HAGUE -- The number of COVID-19 infections in The Netherlands rose by 8,015 since Sunday, slightly lower than the 8,177 cases reported the previous day, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on Monday.

An average of 7,827 confirmed cases per day was reported for the past seven days, compared to 5,861 one week earlier, RIVM was quoted as saying by NOS, a Dutch media company.

HANOI -- Vietnam reported six new cases of COVID-19 infection on Monday, raising its total confirmed cases to 1,140 with 35 deaths, according to its Ministry of Health.

The six new cases, who are Vietnamese and French citizens, have recently entered the country and were quarantined upon arrival, said the ministry.

BRUSSELS -- A set of new and tougher measures for COVID-19 prevention and control decided last week by authorities entered into force in Belgium on Monday.

Under the new rules, cafes, bars and restaurants will have to remain closed for four weeks from Monday.

CAPE TOWN -- South Africa on Monday revised the list of COVID-19 high risk countries, whose tourists are banned from visiting the African country.

The new list has 22 high risk countries, dropping from an initial 60 when the country reopened its borders to international travellers on October 1, according to the Department of Home Affairs.

The high risk countries still include the United States, the United Kingdom, India and Brazil.

BEIJING -- The global COVID-19 caseload surpassed the milestone of 40 million on Monday, reaching 40,040,902, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

The number of victims who have succumbed to the disease worldwide totaled 1,113,750, the data showed.

KABUL -- A total of 87 new COVID-19 cases were registered in Afghanistan over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of the cases in the country to 40,278, said the Public Health Ministry in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, five more patients died over the period, bringing the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 1,497.

TEHRAN -- Iran's health ministry on Monday reported 337 death cases over the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, marking the highest single-day death toll since the virus outbreak in the country.

Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said during her daily briefing that the total deaths rose to 30,712 in Iran.

BEIJING -- China's economic recovery picked up steam in the third quarter as activities normalized amid effective control of the novel coronavirus and the government's sweeping efforts to stimulate demand and consumption, official data showed Monday.

Gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 4.9 percent year on year in Q3, faster than the 3.2-percent growth seen in Q2, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed Monday. Enditem
