BLANTYRE, Malawi, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- In Blantyre, a group of youths have organized themselves into an intuitive of spreading messages of COVID-19 through music and film making to be on social media.

The grouping is particularly directing their messages to fellow youths following the resumption of academic and entertainment activities in the country.

According to Evans Makawa, an independent filmmaker and director, the use of film in spreading messages among the youth is vital since a lot of young people in the country use social media often than other common media.

"As a filmmaker, I know the importance of using film as a tool in storytelling. Lately, I observed that a number of young people in my community have been sharing funny content using the social media. And that gave me an idea of coming up with an initiative of spreading COVID-19 messages through short music videos on social media," he said.

Makawa also said that he has partnered with several religious singing groups in order to have creative and variety content for the project.

"The initiative is becoming a success because of the tireless group of young people who are continuously coming up with musical content. Am very sure that the initiative is going to give out fruits soon," he said.

Recently, studies have indicated that young people in many countries often use social media as a source of news and entertainment compared to other means of communication.

Nickson Uka, a music director at a local music group in the initiative has described the efforts made by the team as timely considering the fact that many schools have reopened and that there is so much interaction among the youth both in schools and entertainment joints.

"It has come to our attention that the COVID-19 cases have started going down, at the same time there are fears that the cases may start going up again because of negligence. For this reason, we aim to come up with music videos that will be reminding people about the pandemic and its dangers," Uka said.

Meanwhile, the team has managed shooting three videos that will be distributed through social media for free. Enditem
