Ethiopia's confirmed COVID-19 cases close to 90,000 mark

ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian Ministry of Health on Monday said the country's total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases hit 89,860, after 723 new cases were reported.

According to the ministry, the new cases were discovered out of 6,546 COVID-19 medical tests that were conducted in the east African country during the last 24 hours.

Ethiopia had conducted 1,403,894 COVID-19 medical tests so far, it was noted.

The ministry also disclosed that the number of COVID-19 related deaths in the country reached 1,365 as of Monday, after 13 new COVID-19 related deaths were reported during the last 24-hour period.

The ministry said that some 43,149 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 had recovered so far, including 500 in the last 24-hour period.

Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa is currently the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than 50 percent of all confirmed COVID-19 cases, according to the ministry.

Ethiopia confirmed its first case of COVID-19 on March 13.

Ethiopia, Africa's second-most populous nation with about 107 million people, has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the East African region.

As of Monday afternoon, total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the African continent has reached 1,644,780 as the death toll due to the pandemic reached 39,738, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Enditem
