ISLAMABAD, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Monday that Pakistan is keen to see the peace process in Afghanistan move forward, which will help in reduction of violence.

Qureshi made the remarks during his meeting with Deborah Lyons, the UN secretary-general's special representative for Afghanistan, the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan said in a statement.

The UN envoy arrived in Islamabad on Sunday for meetings with senior Pakistan and international officials to discuss developments in Afghanistan and regional cooperation, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.

Qureshi said progress in the peace process will also deny space to "spoilers" who do not wish to see the return of peace and stability in the region, according to the statement.

He also highlighted Pakistan's facilitative role in the Afghan peace process, which has been acknowledged by the international community, the statement said.

Qureshi reiterated that the vision of economic prosperity and regional connectivity could not be realized without a peaceful and stable Afghanistan.

The foreign minister also highlighted the range of steps taken by Pakistan to support Afghanistan in transit trade and movement of people, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Enditem
