HOUSTON, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Consumption of renewable energy in the United States reached record high in 2019, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said Monday.

According to EIA's statistics, the United States consumed of a record 11.5 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) renewable energy in 2019, or 11 percent of total U.S. energy consumption.

In its Monthly Energy Review, EIA used a fossil fuel equivalence to calculate primary energy consumption of noncombustible renewables such as wind, hydro, solar, and geothermal.

EIA found that wind accounted for about 24 percent of U.S. renewable energy consumption in 2019. Wood and waste energy, including wood, wood pellets, and biomass waste from landfills, also accounted for about 24 percent of U.S. renewable energy use of the year.

Besides, hydroelectric power, biofuels and solar power accounted for about 22 percent. 20 percent and 9 percent, respectively, of U.S. renewable energy consumption in 2019, said the report. Enditem
