BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil on Monday reported 271 more deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 154,176.
According to the Ministry of Health, 15,383 new cases were confirmed in the same period, bringing the cumulative number of cases to 5,250,727.

QUITO -- Ecuador has managed to bend the curve of novel coronavirus infections nearly eight months since the onset of the outbreak in the South American country, Public Health Minister Juan Carlos Zevallos said Monday.
The infection rate is undoubtedly decreasing, Zevallos said in an interview with local television.

BEIJING -- The National Health Commission said Tuesday that 10 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery on the Chinese mainland Monday.
There were 258 patients still being treated, including four in severe condition, the commission said in its daily report.

TRIPOLI -- The National Center for Disease Control of Libya on Monday reported 1,159 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the national tally to nearly 50,000.
Of 3,952 suspected samples it received, 1,159 tested positive, the center said in a statement, adding that 373 patients have recovered while seven others died.

SYDNEY -- Roughly 70,000 students in the Australian State of New South Wales commenced their Higher School Certificate examinations under strict COVID-19 regulations on Tuesday.
All school leavers in the state have been required to sit the exam, which represents the culmination of 13 years of schooling and is notoriously high-pressure.

NEW YORK -- U.S. COVID-19 deaths surpassed 220,000 on Monday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.
