Live COVID-19 updates: Global COVID-19 cases surpass 40 mln: WHO

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

GENEVA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide has surpassed 40 million, the latest figures from the World Health Organization (WHO) showed.

WHO Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Dashboard showed that globally, as of 11:47 a.m. CEST Tuesday, 40,114,293 confirmed cases, including 1,114,692 deaths, had been reported to WHO.

It's only some one month after WHO reported 30 million COVID-19 cases worldwide on Sept. 18.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 1,380 new COVID-19 cases and 18 new deaths on Tuesday, making the tally at 391,586 and death toll at 5,699, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The official data showed that 13,611 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

The total number of recovered patients in the country stood at 307,141 including 1,542 new recoveries on Tuesday, said the DGHS.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 862 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday, bringing the national total to 22,225.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press briefing that two of the new cases are imported and 860 are local transmissions, among which 673 were reported from the eastern state of Sabah.

TUNIS -- Tunisian Health Ministry on Monday night announced that 2,185 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed during Oct. 17 and Oct. 18, raising the tally of infections to 42,727 in the North African country.

The death toll from the virus rose by 61 to 687, the ministry said in a statement.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 3,602 within one day to 368,842, with the death toll adding by 117 to 12,734, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

According to the ministry, 4,410 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 293,653.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported five additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, taking Hong Kong's total tally to 5,261.

One of the newly reported cases was a local infection which had not been traced, while the rest four were imported cases from India, Britain, France and Russia, the CHP said.

BEIJING -- A total of 60,000 volunteers have received Chinese COVID-19 vaccines during phase-3 clinical trials, and no severe side effects have been reported, a Chinese official said Tuesday.

Four Chinese vaccine candidates have entered international phase-3 clinical trials. They are so far progressing well and have initially proven safe, said Tian Baoguo with the Ministry of Science and Technology at a news conference in Beijing. Enditem
