THE HAGUE, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The number of COVID-19 infections in the Netherlands continued to rise, up by over 8,000 cases in the past 24 hours, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) said on Tuesday.

The number of reported infections in the past day was 8,182, compared to 8,011 on from Sunday to Monday. Meanwhile, 46 people died in the past 24 hours, up from 17 reported in the previous day.

In its weekly update, the RIVM reported 55,587 new infections from Oct. 14 to 20, compared to 43,903 in the previous week. During the period, 185 people died from COVID-19, compared to 150 in the week before.

Last week, the Dutch government announced a "partial lockdown" to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country. Cafes and restaurants would be closed for one month.
