JERUSALEM, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Israel's aerial defense system shot down on Tuesday night a rocket launched from the Palestinian coastal enclave of Gaza Strip toward southern Israel, the Israeli military said.

The rocket triggered sirens in several communities in southern Israel but caused no damage.

"One projectile was fired from the Gaza Strip toward Israeli territory and was intercepted by the Iron Dome Aerial Defense System," an Israeli military spokesperson said in a statement.

The rocket was fired a few hours after the Israeli military announced that "a terror tunnel" crossing from the Palestinian enclave into southern Israel had been discovered.

No group in Gaza has so far assumed responsibility for firing the rocket. Enditem
