Bangladesh approves projects to develop 3 domestic airports

DHAKA, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's highest economic policy-making body Tuesday approved four development projects worth over 32 billion taka, including a 5.67-billion-taka new scheme for modernizing three domestic airports.

The projects were approved at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

After the meeting, the country's Planning Division Secretary Md Ashadul Islam told the media that four projects of three ministries were approved in the meeting.

The four projects which will cost 32.28 billion taka altogether also includes solid waste management, rural infrastructure development (revised) and irrigation expansion.

Of the total cost of the airport development project, Islam said 4.53 billion taka will be financed from the government funds, while the rest amount from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh.

Under the project, according to a proposal, various development works, including asphalt concrete overlaying and the installment of lighting systems, will be carried out on the runways of the Jessore, Syedpur and Rajshahi airports from January 2021 to June 2023.

It is to ensure the safe landing and take-off of aircrafts under a scheme titled "Asphalt Concrete Overlay to the Runway Surface of Jashore Airport, Syedpur Airport and Shah Makhdum Airport, Rajshahi." (1 U.S. dollar equals about 88 taka) Enditem
