SOFIA, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Bulgarian Health Ministry on Wednesday reported a record high of 1,336 new confirmed COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the national tally to 31,863.

The previous daily record of 1,024 new cases was reported on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the country's COVID-19 death toll has reached 1,019 after 11 more patients died in the past 24 hours, the ministry said.

It also said that 1,633 patients are currently hospitalized, with 93 in intensive care, while the number of infected medical workers has reached 1,682.

The ministry added that 261 people have recovered in the last 24 hours, raising the country's total recoveries to 17,414.

In a bid to stop the sharp rise of COVID-19 cases in the country, Health Minister Kostadin Angelov said Tuesday the country will make wearing masks obligatory in all outdoor spaces starting from Thursday.

"We expect the incidence to decrease by up to 30 percent if we all follow the measures," he said. Enditem
