VILNIUS, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania reported 311 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the biggest daily spike since Lithuania confirmed its first case on Feb. 28, the country's Health Ministry said Wednesday.

The latest confirmed cases bring the national total to 8,239, including 120 deaths and 3,599 recoveries so far.

In the past 24 hours, a total of 9,617 coronavirus tests were made.

Among the new cases, sources of infection for 96 cases are unknown while one was imported from Poland, according to the ministry.

"There are very many family clusters, they are very widely spread. People don't remember or can't say where they could have caught the infection," Austina Vzesniauskaite of the National Public Health Center (NVSC) under the country's Health Ministry told local radio broadcaster LRT.

Many new cases were traced to outbreaks at education and healthcare institutions, according to the NVSC. Enditem
