MADRID, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona have confirmed contract extensions of four key players: Marc Andre Ter Stegen, Frenkie de Jong, Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique.

The confirmation of the new deals was made late on Tuesday night after Barca's 5-1 win in their opening Champions League group match against Hungarian side, Ferencvaros. The news is slightly surprising, not just for the late hour at which the new contracts were announced, but also because they come at a time when the club is trying to lower its wage bill to ease its financial problems partly caused by the coronavirus crisis.

The 25-year-old Lenglet, who has impressed since joining from Sevilla in 2018, sees his contract extended from 2023 to 2025 and with his buyout clause set at 300 million euros.

Goalkeeper Ter Stegen has lengthened his contact from 2022 to 2025, while De Jong, who only signed in the summer of 2019 and has not yet fully lived up to expectations in the Barca midfield, has his contract extended from 2024 to 2026 and his release clause raised to 400 million euros.

Perhaps the new deal for Gerard Pique is the most surprising of all given that the 33-year-old's last contract was due to expire in June 2022. Pique's new contract will now see him through to 2024, by which time he will be 37 years old, although the new contract links his continuity to making a certain number of first team appearances in the previous season.
