THE HAGUE, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- COVID-19 infections in the Netherlands kept climbing and reached a new daily record of 8,764 confirmed cases in a 24-hour span, bringing the total infection number to 253,134 since the outbreak of the epidemic, official data showed on Wednesday.

The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) also adjusted Tuesday's number of confirmed cases, which was reduced to 8,175, from the initially reported figure of 8,182.

A further 59 COVID-19 patients had died in the 24 hours, taking the country's death toll to 6,873 since the outbreak of the epidemic, RIVM data showed.

Another 105 COVID-19 patients were admitted to hospital for treatment in the 24 hours, raising the number of COVID-19 patients currently in hospital to 2,013. Of the total, 465 patients were in intensive care.

Also on Wednesday, Dutch King Willem-Alexander and his wife, Queen Maxima, apologized for their decision to take a holiday in Greece last week despite the coronavirus restrictions and the government's advice to the public in the Netherlands to stay at home.

"It hurts to have betrayed your trust in us," said Willem-Alexander in a video statement, sitting next to his wife. "It was very unwise not to take into account the impact of the new restrictions on our society."

The Dutch king, his wife and their three children traveled to their holiday home near Athens, Greece, last Friday. Mainland Greece is a so-called "yellow" area for Dutch travelers, according to the rules, which means they are allowed to go there for holidays. Enditem
