Live COVID-19 updates: Spain's cases top 1 mln, Brazilian health minister tests positive for COVID-19

BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MADRID -- The number of COVID-19 cases in Spain since the start of the pandemic surpassed one million after the country's Ministry of Health confirmed 16,973 new cases on Wednesday to take the total to 1,005,295.

The Health Ministry also confirmed 156 deaths on Wednesday to lift the total COVID-19 fatalities to 34,366.

BRASILIA -- Brazilian Minister of Health General Eduardo Pazuello tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on Wednesday and will remain isolated at his residence, local press confirmed.

Pazuello, 57, was appointed as health minister in September after four months as interim minister.

WARSAW -- Poland's daily number of confirmed coronavirus cases broke 10,000 for the first time on Wednesday.

The Polish Ministry of Health reported a record high of 10,040 new cases on Wednesday, with 130 deaths. The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country has risen to 202,579, while 3,851 people have died since the start of the pandemic.

CAIRO -- Iran reported 5,616 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, raising the total confirmed number in the country to 545,286. Meanwhile, Iraq's tally rose to 438,265.

The pandemic has so far claimed 31,346 lives in Iran, up by 312 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

The Iraqi Health Ministry reported 3,667 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the nationwide infections to 438,265.

The ministry also reported 52 new deaths and 2,876 more recovered cases, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 10,418 and the total recoveries to 369,010 in the country.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil on Wednesday said its COVID-19 death toll surpassed 155,000 after 566 more patients died of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, pushing the number of fatalities to 155,403.

According to the Ministry of Health, in the same period, tests detected 24,818 more cases of COVID-19 infection, raising the total caseload to 5,298,772 since the first case was detected Feb. 26 in the state of Sao Paulo.

BERLIN -- Germany on Wednesday registered 7,595 new COVID-19 cases in a 24-hour span, taking the country's total tally to 380,762, according to data released by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

The death toll rose by 39 in one day to 9,875, according to RKI, the government agency for disease control and prevention. Enditem
