BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW YORK -- New York state on Wednesday further clarified its strategy to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, targeting the micro-cluster areas with precision while having the surrounding areas as a cushion against the impact of the virus.

"Cluster zone" focus areas are designated based on geographic case prevalence and restrictions are implemented accordingly based on the severity of spread, said a release issued by the state government.

BRUSSELS -- The European Commission has issued its first social bonds on behalf of the European Union (EU) as a fundraiser to help its member states to protect jobs against the economic impacts of the COVID-19, it said Wednesday.

The EU is sparing no efforts to safeguard livelihoods in Europe, providing financial support under "European instrument for temporary Support to mitigate Unemployment Risks in an Emergency (SURE)" to countries hit badly by the crisis, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland reported 14 new imported COVID-19 cases Wednesday, bringing the total number of imported cases to 3,167, the National Health Commission said Thursday.

Of the new imported cases, eight were reported in Shanghai, three in Guangdong, two in Sichuan and one in Fujian, the commission said in its daily report.

QUITO -- Ecuador has secured 4 million doses of possible vaccines for COVID-19, Health Minister Juan Carlos Zevallos said Wednesday.

It was achieved through purchase agreements reached on Oct. 17 and 19 for access to 2 million doses from U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc and its German partner BioNTech SE, and 2 million doses from COVAX, a global initiative backed by the World Health Organization to ensure effective and equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines, Zevallos said.

JERUSALEM -- Israel's health ministry reported on Wednesday 1,173 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total in the country to 307,335.

The death toll reached 2,291, with 13 new fatalities. The number of patients in serious condition decreased from 614 to 596, out of 1,055 patients currently hospitalized, according to the ministry.

KIGALI -- The unemployment rate in Rwanda dropped to 16 percent in August, attributable to a further reopening of the economy from restrictive measures aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19, official figures showed Wednesday.

The number of people in gainful employment rose from 3,199,104 in May to 3,667,611 in August, said a report from the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda. Enditem
