Live COVID-19 updates: India's tally rises to 7,706,946, death toll at 116,616

BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 7,706,946 as 55,839 more cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data released by the health ministry on Thursday.

The death toll surged to 116,616, with 702 deaths recorded since Wednesday morning.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 121 more cases of the COVID-19 as of midnight Wednesday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 25,543.

The daily caseload rose above 100 in seven days, marking the highest in October due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases.

BEIJING -- The National Health Commission said Thursday that 16 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery on the Chinese mainland Wednesday.

There were 245 patients still being treated, including two in severe condition, the commission said in its daily report.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported two new imported cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, both imported cases in managed isolation facilities.

The first case arrived on Monday from the Netherlands via Dubai and the second case arrived on Wednesday from Doha. They were both tested on arrival after developing symptoms on their journey, according to the Ministry of Health.

MONTEVIDEO -- Uruguay will step up prevention measures to control an outbreak of the COVID-19 in the northern city of Rivera, located on the border with Brazil, health authorities announced on Wednesday.

Health Minister Daniel Salinas explained at a press conference that authorities have put a number of protective health measures in place in the area and plan to observe "how the epidemiological situation evolves."

PARIS -- The number of COVID-19 infections in France reached 1,000,369 as of 0124 GMT on Thursday while the country's death toll from the disease hit 34,075, the latest figures from the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University showed.

France has become the second European country whose COVID-19 cases surpassed 1 million mark after Spain did that on Wednesday. Enditem
