Live COVID-19 updates: Tokyo's new COVID-19 cases remain in triple digits for 3rd straight day

BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SOFIA -- The Bulgarian Health Ministry on Thursday reported record new COVID-19 infections and deaths of 1,472 and 29 respectively over the past 24 hours, taking the national tally of confirmed cases and death toll to 33,335 and 1,048 respectively.

The previous daily records of 1,336 new COVID-19 cases and 23 related deaths were reported on Wednesday and Oct. 13, respectively.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The BWF World Junior Championships 2020 have been canceled following uncertainty and travel restrictions due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the Badminton World Federation said on Thursday.

The tournament, scheduled to be held in New Zealand in January of 2021, but with a host for the next edition already in place for later in 2021, and the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation expected to stretch into next year, postponement "was not an option", the world governing body of badminton said in a statement.

MANILA -- The Philippines' Department of Health on Thursday reported 1,664 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the country's total tally to 363,888.

The department said that 843 more patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 312,333. The death toll climbed to 6,783 with 38 newly reported deaths from the coronavirus pandemic.

TOKYO -- Tokyo reported 185 new daily COVID-19 cases on Thursday, rising from 150 infections confirmed the previous day, bringing the cumulative total in the capital to 29,520.

According to the Tokyo metropolitan government's preliminary figures, the latest daily tally marks the third straight day when new cases have been in triple digits. Enditem
