U.S. dollar rises amid economic data

NEW YORK, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar strengthened in late trading on Thursday as market participants digested the newly-released weekly jobless claims numbers.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, was up 0.37 percent at 92.9520.

In late New York trading, the euro was down to 1.1817 U.S. dollars from 1.1860 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound fell to 1.3077 dollars from 1.3157 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar decreased to 0.7112 U.S. dollar from 0.7126 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 104.87 Japanese yen, higher than 104.53 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar increased to 0.9072 Swiss franc from 0.9046 Swiss franc, and it increased to 1.3142 Canadian dollars from 1.3130 Canadian dollars.

On the data front, U.S. initial claims, a rough way to measure layoffs, came in at 787,000 in the week ending Oct. 17, a decrease of 55,000 from the previous week's revised level, the Department of Labor reported on Thursday.

Economists polled by Dow Jones expected first-time applicants for state unemployment insurance to have totaled 875,000. Enditem
