BUDAPEST, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Hungary registered 2,066 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, a new daily record since the outbreak of the epidemic in the country, according to the government's coronavirus information website.

Figures from the website showed that the total number of confirmed cases since the COVID-19 outbreak in Hungary stood at 54,278, with 15,655 recoveries and 1,352 fatalities. Currently, 2,209 COVID-19 patients are being treated in hospital, 200 of whom are on ventilators.

In line with the rising number of infections, the Hungarian government made mask wearing compulsory even in outdoor events, starting from Friday,

"From Friday, the wearing of masks will be obligatory even during outdoor events, such as sporting events and open-air-rallies", the government stated on the website.

According to the decision, players and referees do not have to cover their mouths and noses, and speakers at demonstrations can also speak without a mask.

Those refusing to comply with the new regulation must be removed from the event.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), face masks should be used as part of a comprehensive strategy of measures to suppress COVID-19 transmission and save lives. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreaks in early 2020, wearing masks in public has been widely accepted in Asian countries like China, South Korea, Japan and Vietnam to limit the spread of COVID-19.
