THE HAGUE, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- The daily number of COVID-19 infections in the Netherlands surpassed 10,000 for the first time, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) announced on Friday.
The new daily record of 10,007 from Thursday to Friday was 724 higher than the number of infections from Wednesday to Thursday. The RIVM reported about 47 deaths from the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, compared to 46 from Wednesday to Thursday.
Last Tuesday, the Dutch government announced a "partial lockdown" to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country. Cafes and restaurants were closed for one month since last Wednesday. The forthcoming days will be crucial in seeing an effect of the measures in the infection figures.
As the world is struggling to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, countries including Germany, France, Italy, China, Russia, Britain and the United States are racing to find a vaccine. Enditem
