GHAZNI, Afghanistan, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Nine civilians were killed and two police officers wounded in two successive improvised bomb explosions in Afghanistan's eastern Ghazni province on Saturday, local police confirmed.

"The first explosion occurred after a bus carrying civilians touched off an improvised explosive device (IED) in Kotal-e-Rawza, an area on the outskirts of provincial capital Ghazni city roughly at 9:00 a.m. local time," provincial police spokesman Ahmad Khan Sirat told Xinhua.

The second explosion came minutes later, hitting an armored vehicle of responding police in the area, injuring two police officers, he said.

The blasts occurred along a main road connecting Afghanistan's capital Kabul with southern and western provinces.

Among the killed were three women and the provincial police would notify the victims' next of kin, according to the police official.

Militants in Afghanistan have been using home-made IEDs to make roadside bombs and landmines targeting security forces, but the lethal weapons also inflict casualties on civilians.

More than 800 civilians were killed and over 2,330 others wounded in IED explosions in 2019, according to official figures. Enditem
