BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 16,521 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, slightly down from the record high of 17,340 a day earlier, the country's COVID-19 response center said Saturday.
Russia's cumulative number of coronavirus cases has grown to 1,497,167, including 25,821 deaths and 1,130,818 recoveries, the center said in a statement.

WASHINGTON -- More than a half million lives could be lost to COVID-19 across the United States by the end of February, researchers said Friday.
According to a study published in the Nature Medicine journal, researchers at the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) also found that universal mask use could save around 130,000 lives in the country in the coming months.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 7,814,682 as 53,370 more cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data released by the federal health ministry on Saturday.
The death toll surged to 117,956, with 650 deaths recorded since Friday morning.

BEIJING -- Two new imported cases of COVID-19 were reported in Beijing Friday, the municipal health commission said Saturday.
The two men, both locals of southwest China's Sichuan Province, arrived in Beijing from Pakistan on Oct. 8 and showed symptoms such as dry and sore throat while under quarantine.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said Friday that if elected, he will make COVID-19 vaccines free for all Americans.
"Once we have a safe and effective vaccine, it has to be free to everyone -- whether or not you're insured," Biden said in a speech in Wilmington, Delaware. He assailed incumbent President Donald Trump for his response to the coronavirus pandemic, saying he has "given up" fighting the virus and has "quit on America."

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 77 more cases of the COVID-19 as of midnight Friday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 25,775.
The daily caseload fell below 100 in three days, but the double-digit growth continued due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases. Enditem
