Death toll in India fireworks factory blast rises to 7

NEW DELHI, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Death toll from blast at a fireworks factory in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu Saturday rose to seven as two more workers succumbed to their injuries in hospital, police said.

The blast triggering a massive fire took place on Friday in Kallupatti area of Madurai district, about 504 km southwest of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu

"Today two women, who were undergoing treatment at a hospital for burns have succumbed, taking the death toll in the incident to seven," a police official said.

On Friday the blast killed five women and injured five others.

So far all the deceased in the incident were women.

Police said they have detained the manager of the fireworks manufacturing factory.

The actual cause of the blast is being ascertained. However, police said preliminary investigations revealed the mishandling of explosive ingredients inside the factory.
