Live COVID-19 updates: Vietnam records 8 new cases, 1,168 in total

BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

HANOI -- Vietnam reported eight new cases of COVID-19 infection on Sunday, bringing its total confirmed cases to 1,168 with 35 deaths from the disease so far, according to its Ministry of Health.

The new cases, including two one-year-old boys, are all Vietnamese citizens who have recently entered the country from abroad and were quarantined upon arrival, said the ministry.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia's King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah on Sunday urged the country's politicians to stop "politicking" the COVID-19 fight when Malaysia continues to fight the COVID-19 outbreak.

The National Palace said in a statement that the King held a meeting with the country's other hereditary rulers after Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin sought his consent to declare a national emergency according to the constitution that would grant the government emergency powers to tackle the threat posed by COVID-19.

DHAKA -- The Bangladeshi government has sought soft loans from the development partners including the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to procure COVID-19 vaccines and boost economic recovery.

As part of its efforts 1 billion U.S. dollars was sought from the World Bank at the latest.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported six additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, taking Hong Kong's tally to 5,295.

Of the newly-reported cases, five were imported and the remaining one, involving a 42-year-old male, was a local case with unknown source of infection, the CHP said in a statement.

TEHRAN -- Iran's health ministry reported 6,191 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, raising the total confirmed number in the country to 568,896.

The pandemic has so far claimed 32,616 lives in Iran, up by 296 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 16,710 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 1,513,877, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement Sunday.

Meanwhile, 229 new deaths were reported, taking the nationwide count to 26,050. Enditem
