Live COVID-19 updates: Australia's island state reopens after seven-month closure

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SYDNEY -- Australia's state of Tasmania eased restrictions on visitors from elsewhere in the country on Monday, no longer requiring them to seek special exemptions or quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

Roughly seven months since the island state effectively shut its borders to guard against COVID-19, visitors will begin to return, easing pressure on the heavily tourism-geared economy.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 7,909,959 as 45,148 more cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data released by the federal health ministry on Monday.

The death toll surged to 119,014, with 480 deaths recorded since Sunday morning.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- The death toll from COVID-19 in Brazil on Sunday rose to 157,134 after the country registered 231 deaths in the last 24 hours.

According to the country's Ministry of Health, 13,493 new infections have been registered since Saturday, bringing the total caseload to 5,394,128.

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentina on Sunday reported another 284 deaths from COVID-19, pushing the national count to near 29,000, according to the Ministry of Health.

The ministry also reported 9,253 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the nationwide tally to 1,090,589 with 894,819 recoveries.

YANGON -- Myanmar's Health and Sports Ministry has lifted its COVID-19 restrictions on mass gatherings and stay-at-home order for the upcoming general elections.

According to the announcement on late Sunday, the Ministry of Health and Sports will allow gatherings of 30 people or more at the polling stations on the election day.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 119 more cases of the COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Monday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 25,955.

The daily caseload rose above 100 in three days due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases.

BEIJING -- No new locally-transmitted COVID-19 cases were reported Sunday across the Chinese mainland, the National Health Commission said Monday.

A total of 161 new asymptomatic cases, including 24 arriving from outside the mainland, were reported, the commission said in its daily report.
