RAMALLAH, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Palestine urged on Monday the UN Security Council (UNSC) to rescue the stalled peace process in the Middle East by holding an international conference for the purpose.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki made the appeal during his online speech from Ramallah to an open UNSC session held in New York.

"It is necessary to meet the call of President Mahmoud Abbas to hold an international peace conference to resolve the conflict in the Middle East," al-Maliki said.

He also called on the international community to punish Israel for its settlement building in the West Bank.

"It is not enough to declare the settlements illegal. Punishment must follow," he said. Enditem
