BRASILIA, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Operation Green Brazil 2, launched in May to combat illegal logging in the Amazon rainforest, will be extended through April 2021, Brazilian Vice President Hamilton Mourao said on Monday.

The operation saw military troops deployed to border regions, indigenous lands, and federally-managed environmental conservation areas, among other parts of the Amazon.

The measure was due to end in November, but since the funds for the program have not been used up, officials decided to prolong the operation, said Mourao.

Another 180 million reals (32 million U.S. dollars) are still left, he said.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) said last week that lack of funding stopped its firefighting program, which then resumed after the government released more resources.

The Amazon has been beset by wildfires this year, even more than in 2019, according to the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Enditem
