Sudanese gov't decides to raise fuel prices

KHARTOUM, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese government on Tuesday decided to quadruple the fuel prices, effective immediately.
"It has been decided to increase the prices of fuel for the service and commercial sectors," Khairy Abdel-Rahman, Sudan's acting minister of energy and mining, said at a press conference in the capital Khartoum.
The minister said that gasoline will be sold for 46 Sudanese pounds per liter to the service sector, and 106 pounds per liter to the commercial sector.
He added that benzine will be sold to the service sector for 56 pounds per liter, and 120 pounds per liter to the commercial sector.
The new prices will be effective as of Tuesday evening, he added.
"The new prices were approved by a ministerial decision issued by the Ministry of Finance based on the revised budget of 2020," Khairy said.
He further explained that the new prices of gasoline and benzine will be subject to review on a weekly basis by a joint committee which includes representatives of importers and the finance ministry.
Sudan has been facing a dire economic crisis, illustrated by the shortage of basic commodities, including severe fuel shortage and high poverty rate.
Sudan's transitional government is carrying out a reform program reached with the International Monetary Fund, including the removal of government subsidies on benzine and gasoline. Enditem
