BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MADRID -- The Spanish Health Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that the country registered 18,418 new infections and 267 deaths over the past 24 hours. It is the highest daily COVID-19 deaths in the second wave.

The total number of infections since the start of the pandemic in Spain reached 1,116,738 and the death toll rose to 35,298.

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday that she has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Sheinbaum wrote on Twitter that she was informed of the test result on Monday night and said that she would work remotely under medical supervision, although she added that she felt "well" and "strong."

In a videoconference, the head of the government of Mexico's capital, explained that she takes a COVID-19 test every 15 days.

OTTAWA -- Canada hit another grim milestone on Tuesday as the country's death toll of COVID-19 reached 10,001, according to CTV.

The milestone, which has only been reached by 20 other nations according to a tally kept by Johns Hopkins University, comes amid a second wave of the virus that has shattered new case records across parts of the country.

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentina's President Alberto Fernandez on Tuesday said he was confident that by March of next year there will be a set of vaccines to effectively combat the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Argentina is carrying out "negotiations" and has "agreements in the process of being signed" with all the laboratories working on a vaccine, he said.

BEIJING -- Li Zhanshu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, called on BRICS countries to enhance parliamentary cooperation during a BRICS parliamentary forum via video link on Tuesday.

He suggested that the legislative bodies should strengthen cooperation in the field of public health and provide legal protection for epidemic prevention and control.

Legislative bodies of BRICS countries should advance international joint prevention and control efforts to combat COVID-19, and oppose politicizing and stigmatizing the virus, as well as moves of shifting blames, said Li.

PARIS -- The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in France jumped by 523 to 35,541, the largest daily rise since end April, confirming the worsening of the epidemic situation which has forced the government to consider "difficult decisions" to halt the epidemic resurgence.

According to figures posted on the government's data website, the total number of confirmed cases since the COVID-19 outbreak in France stood at 1,198,695, after 33,417 people contracted the coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

SANTIAGO -- Chile registered 922 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the past 24 hours, marking the first time since May that the number of new daily cases has been under 1,000, Health Minister Enrique Paris said on Tuesday.

"The new daily cases total 922. It is an important sign, but also a call for citizens to continue taking care of themselves and not let down their guard in the fight against the coronavirus," Paris said in a statement. Enditem
