SANTIAGO, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- A strong World Trade Organization (WTO) can help tackle the challenges facing global trade in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic, Chile said on Tuesday.

During a virtual informal ministerial meeting of the WTO, the Chilean Foreign Affairs Ministry's Undersecretary for International Economic Relations Rodrigo Yanez stressed the benefits of international trade for population growth and development.

To that end, the WTO should spearhead an inclusive and sustainable trade agenda, said Yanez.

The world also needs to maintain open supply chains, especially for products considered essential to tackling the current health crisis, particularly once a COVID-19 vaccine is available to the public, Yanez said.

"Recovery is through the maintenance of an operational WTO that is capable of responding to the challenges that international trade faces," he said. Enditem
