Roundup: India's COVID-19 death toll surpasses 120,000, Indonesia's tally passes 400,000

HONG KONG, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- More deaths and confirmed cases were reported in Asia-Pacific countries on Wednesday, as the total deaths in India surpassed the 120,000-mark and Indonesia's infections 400,000.

With 508 deaths in the past 24 hours, the death toll in India reached 120,010. The total COVID-19 tally reached 7,990,322 as 43,893 new cases were detected across the country since Tuesday morning.

Still there are 610,803 active cases in the country, while 7,259,509 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals.

Indonesia's confirmed cases surpassed 400,000 after 4,029 new cases were recorded within one day, pushing the tally to 400,483, while the death toll rose by 100 to 13,612.

Meanwhile, 3,545 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 325,793.

The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,053 new confirmed cases, bringing the tally in the country to 375,180.

The DOH said 540 more patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 329,111.

The death toll climbed to 7,114 after 61 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH added.

Bangladesh reported 1,493 new cases and 23 more deaths on Wednesday, making the tally at 403,079 and the death toll at 5,861, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The total number of recovered patients in the country stood at 319,733 including 1,610 new recoveries on Wednesday, said the DGHS.

Malaysia reported 801 new infections, bringing the national total to 29,441, according to the country's Health Ministry.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said Wednesday at a press briefing that two of the new cases are imported and 799 are local transmissions, the majority of which are from the eastern state of Sabah.

Another eight new deaths were reported, bringing the death toll to 246.

The death toll in Afghanistan has increased to 1,529 after six patients lost their lives within the past 24 hours, the country's Ministry of Public Health reported on Wednesday.

The ministry also confirmed 113 new cases during the period, bringing the number of infected people across the country to 41,145, including 5,379 active cases, the ministry said in a statement.

South Korea reported 103 more cases as of Wednesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 26,146.

Of the new cases, 23 were Seoul residents and 28 were people residing in Gyeonggi province.

Seven were imported, lifting the combined figure to 3,686.

One more death was confirmed, leaving the death toll at 461. The total fatality rate stood at 1.76 percent.

A total of 92 more patients were discharged from quarantine after making full recovery, pulling up the combined number to 24,073. Enditem
