MEXICO CITY, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Mexican government on Wednesday called on the country's industrialists to take an initiative to pursue the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution, as a way to spur economic recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Industry is one of Mexico's major economic backbones, contributing about 30 percent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), said Alfonso Romo, chief of staff for Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, during the opening of the ongoing Annual Meeting of Industrialists.

"You, as industrialists, must embrace the Fourth Industrial Revolution more aggressively," said Romo, noting "we never imagined we would face a war with an enemy that attacks silently, but has devastating consequences."

The Fourth Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0, centers on the use of technology to improve manufacturing processes, which allows a company to be more efficient, and save time and money.

Greater technological development can transform the local labor market and improve the competitiveness of companies, Romo said.

The three-day event is being held virtually as a contingency plan, with France as guest country of this year's edition. Enditem
