COLOMBO, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's total COVID-19 patient count surpassed the 9,000 mark on Thursday as the number of infected patients continued to rise especially from the capital, health ministry statistics showed.

According to authorities, over 50,000 are under quarantine while till Thursday evening, the total COVID-19 patient count had reached 9,205 out of which 4,142 patients had recovered and been discharged from hospitals.

The government information department said that a rising number of patients in recent days were reported from a cluster in Minuwangoda, on the outskirts of Colombo, and from a fish market in Peliyagoda, in Colombo, both of which were detected earlier this month.

Within the past 10 days alone, health workers said that over 900 people tested positive in the capital alone, all linked to the fish market where the infection broke out among the vendors and stall owners.

Several parts of Colombo north have been under a curfew since earlier this week while the entire western province will come under a curfew from Friday midnight till Monday morning 5:00 a.m., the police said.

Following a rise in the number of patients, Sri Lanka's Health Ministry has made it a rule to wear face masks, maintain social distance, and keep hands sanitized. Those defying the rules will be fined 54 U.S. dollars and face up to six months in prison.

Sri Lanka has reported 19 deaths from the virus. Enditem
