BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ACCRA -- Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Ahmad Ahmad has tested positive for COVID-19, a statement from the continental football governing body said on Friday.

"After his arrival in Cairo on Wednesday, October 28, Mr. Ahmad Ahmad, President of CAF, presented mild flu symptoms and submitted to the COVID-19 protocol. Today, the test results are positive. The president immediately self-isolate for at least the next 14 days at his hotel," the CAF statement said.

BERLIN -- Germany registered 18,681 new COVID-19 infections within one day, a new record for the third day in a row, bringing the total confirmed cases to 499,694, the federal government agency for disease control and prevention Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Friday.

The number of registered COVID-19 victims in Germany increased by 77 to a total of 10,349 deaths, according to the RKI.

BRUSSELS -- Belgium will move to stricter lockdown, with rules valid throughout the country to fight against COVID-19, Prime Minister Alexander de Croo announced Friday.

According to the rules, all non-essential businesses will have to close. Food stores and supermarkets will remain open. Restaurants and bars in hotels will close.

NEW YORK -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 9 million on Friday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

U.S. COVID-19 case count rose to 9,007,298, with the national death toll reaching 229,293, as of 3:24 p.m. local time (1924 GMT), according to the CSSE.

LJUBLJANA -- The government of Slovenia on Friday extended key restrictive measures designed to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Store closures and the six-person ceiling for gatherings have been extended by a week. The mandatory use of face masks in indoor and outdoor public spaces and obligation to use hand sanitizers have been extended by two weeks.

THE HAGUE -- The number of new daily coronavirus infections in the Netherlands topped the 11,000 mark for the first time, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) said on Friday.

A total of 11,141 COVID-19 infections were registered in the past 24 hours, 865 more than the 10,276 cases reported on Thursday. Despite this increase, the RIVM said the figures were "stable." Enditem
