DAR ES SALAAM -- Hussein Ali Mwinyi was sworn in on Monday as president of Tanzania's Zanzibar, succeeding Ali Mohamed Shein, who ruled the Indian Ocean islands for two five-year terms.

Mwinyi, a doctor by profession and former minister for defense, was sworn in by Zanzibar's Chief Justice Omar Othman Makungu at a ceremony at Amani Stadium on Unguja Island. (Tanzania-Zanzibar-Inauguration)

LAGOS -- At least 16 people were killed and seven others injured when a truck rammed into a market in southwest Nigeria on Saturday, police said.

HANOI -- Floods and landslides triggered by Typhoon Molave have left 33 people dead and 49 missing in Vietnam's central and central highlands regions as of Monday, the country's Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said.
