Live COVID-19 updates: Germany reports 12,097 new COVID-19 cases

BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BERLIN -- New COVID-19 infections in Germany increased by 12,097 within one day to a total of 545,027 as the country entered its second partial lockdown, the federal government agency for disease control and prevention Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Monday.

After COVID-19 infections reached a new record last week, the federal and state governments agreed on far-reaching restrictions on daily life such as tougher contact restrictions and the closure of restaurants and bars for the month of November.

BUDAPEST -- Hungary on Monday registered 3,581 new COVID-19 cases in a 24-hour span, raising the national total to 82,780, according to the government's coronavirus information website.

In the past 24 hours, a further 70 COVID-19 patients -- a daily record -- have succumbed to the disease, taking the death toll to 1,889 in Hungary, while 20,476 have recovered. Currently, 4,417 patients are being treated in hospital, and 313 of them are on ventilators.

TEHRAN -- Iran's health ministry reported 8,289 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, raising the total nationwide number to 628,780.

The pandemic has so far claimed 35,738 lives in Iran, up by 440 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

HONG KONG -- China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported six new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Monday, including one local case of unknown origin.

The newly-reported cases included three imported cases and three local infections, bringing Hong Kong's total tally to 5,336.

KABUL -- The Afghan public health ministry on Monday reported 132 new cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of patients to 41,633 since the outbreak of the virus in February in the country.

A statement from the ministry said five more patients had died over the period, pushing the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 1,541.

A total of 16 patients recovered over the past 24 hours, bringing the number of recoveries to 34,342 in the country, the statement added.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 1,736 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and 25 new deaths on Moday, bringing its total tally to 410,988 with 5,966 deaths, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The official data showed that 12,891 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

The total number of recovered patients in the country rose to 327,901 with 1,961 new recoveries on Monday, said the DGHS. Enditem
