UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday called for calm in Cote d'Ivoire after the release of the provisional results of Saturday's presidential election, said his spokesman.
The secretary-general took note of the announcement by the Independent Electoral Commission of the provisional results of the presidential election. He strongly condemned the violence that occurred prior to, during and after the election and was saddened by the multiple fatalities, said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman, in a statement.
The secretary-general called on all political stakeholders to respect the country's constitutional order and adhere to the rule of law. He urged the president and the main opposition leaders to engage in meaningful and inclusive dialogue to chart a way forward out of the prevailing crisis by working together toward consensus and national cohesion, said the statement.
The secretary-general reiterated the readiness of the United Nations to support such a dialogue with the objective to preserve stability and promote national reconciliation throughout the country, it said.
According to the provisional results, Cote d'Ivoire's incumbent President Alassane Ouattara has won re-election with 94 percent of the vote. Enditem
