BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BRUSSELS -- The recovery of European Union (EU) economies from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to be slower than previously thought due to the resurgence of the virus spread in the bloc, European Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis warned on Wednesday.

"The months ahead will be challenging for everyone, so it is especially important that we discuss and coordinate our policies," Dombrovskis told a press conference following the virtual meeting of the EU's economy and finance ministers.

WARSAW -- The Polish government announced additional restrictions to curb the COVID-19 epidemic on Wednesday, as health authorities reported another 24,692 cases and 373 deaths -- both new 24-hour highs since the virus outbreak.

The measures, which will come in force Saturday and last at least until Nov. 29, include extending required distance schooling to the youngest school age groups and shutting down all cultural facilities including cinemas and theaters.

ATHENS -- Greece marked a new single-day high of COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, with 2,646 cases reported in 24 hours, according to the National Public Health Organization (EODY).

The number of cases since the start of the pandemic in the country totaled 46,892, while the death toll rose by 18 to 673.

PARIS -- France reported 40,558 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, higher than 36,330 registered a day before, health authorities data showed.

The new infections pushed the national tally since the epidemic outbreak to 1,543,321.

A further 385 people have died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the cumulative fatalities to 38,674.

RABAT -- Morocco reported on Wednesday 5,745 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily spike since the start of outbreak in the country on March 2.

According to the new data published by the ministry of health, Morocco now has a total of 235,310 coronavirus cases, and 3,982 people have died from the virus, including 82 new deaths in the past 24 hours.

The total number of recoveries from COVID-19 in Morocco increased to 193,886 after 3,977 new ones were added, while 886 patients are in intensive care units, the ministry of health said.

VILNIUS -- The Lithuanian government on Wednesday decided to introduce another nationwide lockdown as of Saturday till Nov. 29 due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the Baltic country.

"In view of the unfavorable COVID-19 epidemiological situation, we propose a quarantine throughout the territory of Lithuania," Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga was quoted as saying by local website Lrt.lt.

LONDON -- Another 25,177 people in Britain have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 1,099,059, according to official figures released Wednesday.

The coronavirus-related deaths in Britain rose by 492 to 47,742, the highest daily increase since May 19 when 500 were reported. the data showed.

The figures were released as British lawmakers on Wednesday voted in favor of the government's month-long lockdown for England by 516 votes to 38, a majority of 478. Enditem
