NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 8,411,724 on Friday even as 47,638 new cases were registered across the country in the past 24 hours, said latest data released by the federal health ministry.

With 670 deaths since Thursday morning, the total death toll in the country due to the pandemic reached 124,985, added the ministry's data.(India-COVID-19)

MANILA -- Severe tropical storm Atsani crossed Batanes, an island province in the northernmost tip of the Philippines, on Friday morning, the country's state weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Atsani crossed Misanga Island in Itbayat town in Batanes province at 7:50 a.m., with sustained winds of 95 km per hour and gusts of up to 115 km per hour.(Philippines-Storm)

CANBERRA -- Australian researchers have developed a quick and effective method of authenticating wine, potentially putting an end to wine fraud.
