Live COVID-19 updates: Malaysia reports 852 new cases, total cases pass 40,000

BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 852 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said on Sunday, bringing the national total to 40,209.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that 13 of the new cases are imported and with the remainder being local transmissions. The majority of the new cases are from eastern state of Sabah, with 524 of the new cases reported in the state.

WUHAN -- Central China's Hubei Province reported four confirmed COVID-19 cases and two asymptomatic cases Saturday, all imported from Indonesia, the provincial health commission said Sunday.

The patients and asymptomatic carriers arrived in Wuhan Tianhe International Airport from Jakarta, Indonesia via Sriwijaya Air flight SJ3124 on Friday.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 3,880 within one day to 437,716, with the death toll adding by 74 to 14,614, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.

According to the ministry, 3,881 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 368,298.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection reported 10 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, including three local cases of unknown origin.

The newly-reported cases included seven imported cases and three local infections, bringing Hong Kong's total tally to 5,374.

KABUL -- Afghanistan registered 126 new COVID-19 positive cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of patients infected with the disease to 42,159 in the country, the Public Health Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

A total of six patients have succumbed to the disease over the period, totaling the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 1,562 since outbreak of the disease in February in Afghanistan, the statement added.

KAMPALA -- Uganda reported 214 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, bringing its national tally to 14,066, said the Ugandan Health Ministry.

The new cases included a cargo truck driver who tested positive for the coronavirus after returning from neighboring South Sudan, the ministry said in a statement. Enditem
