HONG KONG, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in Asia-Pacific countries as India's tally reached 8,553,657 on Monday while cases in the Philippines is approaching 400,000.

India's COVID-19 tally reached 8,553,657 as 45,903 new cases were registered across the country in the past 24 hours, said the latest data released by the federal health ministry.

With 490 deaths since Sunday morning, the death toll in the country due to the pandemic reached 126,611, showed the ministry's data.

Still there are 509,673 active COVID-19 cases in the country, while 7,917,373 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals so far.

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 2,853 within one day to 440,569, with the death toll adding by 75 to 14,689, the Health Ministry said.

According to the ministry, 3,968 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 372,266.

The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,058 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the the country's total tally to 398,449.

The DOH said that 182 more patients have recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 361,784. The death toll rose to 7,647 including 108 new deaths from the coronavirus epidemic.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque strongly urged people to be more vigilant in wearing face masks, keeping social distance, and avoiding crowds to maintain the downtrend in daily caseload in the country.

Malaysia reported 972 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said, bringing the national total to 41,181.

Eight more deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 294.

Another 1,345 patients have been released after recovery, bringing the total cured and discharged to 29,579 , or 71.8 percent of all cases.

The death toll of COVID-19 in Afghanistan has increased to 1,574 after 12 patients lost their lives within the past 24 hours, the country's Ministry of Public Health reported.

During the period, health authorities also confirmed 138 new cases, bringing the number of infected people across the country to 42,297, including 6,002 active cases, the ministry said in a statement.

A total of 263 people recovered and were discharged from hospitals since early Sunday, according to the ministry.

South Korea reported 126 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Sunday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 27,553.

The daily caseload hovered above 100 for the second straight day due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases.

Two more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 480. The total fatality rate stood at 1.74 percent.

The number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the Maldives has risen to 40, state media reported.

The HPA data showed that the Maldives has 847 active cases of COVID-19 spread across 14 inhabited islands and 26 resorts. Some 60 patients are currently hospitalised for treatment.

New Zealand reported four new cases of COVID-19, all detected in recent returnees in managed isolation facilities.

One patient was recovered and currently the total number of active cases is 51. The country's total number of confirmed cases is 1,630, according to the ministry.

Positive cases have been found in at least three workers at government-managed isolation facilities in both Auckland and Christchurch, the statement said. Enditem
