BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Brunei's premier football competition, the FA Cup, has been canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak and unavoidable technical issues, the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) announced.

NFABD, the country's national football governing body will be having further discussions with representatives from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on the selection of the club that will represent Brunei in the 2021 AFC Cup qualifying round, local daily the Borneo Bulletin reported on Tuesday, quoting a press statement from NFABD.

Earlier this month, NFABD postponed the decision to organize the FA Cup 2020 until the next press conference on the next COVID-19 de-escalation plan.

The Brunei Super League (BSL) 2020, the country's top tier of football system, contested two rounds only before being suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was eventually canceled on September 19.

According to the report, NFABD has since intended to replace the league with the FA Cup, which could serve as a potential route for local clubs to represent the country in next year's AFC Cup.

Last year's FA Cup saw 17 teams participating, including teams mostly from the BSL and Brunei Premier League, the country's second-tier competition. Enditem
