NEW DELHI, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 8,636,011 on Wednesday as 44,281 new cases were registered across the country in the past 24 hours, said the latest data released by the federal health ministry.
With 512 deaths since Tuesday morning, the death toll in the country due to the pandemic reached 127,571, added the ministry's data.
Still there are 494,657 active COVID-19 cases in the country, while 8,013,783 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals so far.
This is the first time when the number of active cases in the country has come down to below the 500,000-mark after several months, and the first time when the number of people cured and discharged from hospitals crossed the eight million mark.
The Indian government has been focusing on ramping up COVID-19 testing facilities across the country.
Till Tuesday a total of 120,769,151 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the country, out of which 1,153,294 tests were conducted on Tuesday alone, showed the data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Wednesday.
This is the first time when the total number of COVID-19 tests crossed the 120 million mark in the country.
The capital city New Delhi has been witnessing a spurt in COVID-19 cases over the past couple of weeks, which was termed as the third wave.
Last week the total COVID-19 count in the national capital had crossed the 400,000 mark. Enditem
