German shares lose 1.08 pct at start of trading on Thursday

BERLIN, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- German stocks were off to a shaky start on Thursday, with the benchmark DAX index losing 142.7 points, or 1.08 percent, opening at 13,073.48 points.

The biggest winner among Germany's 30 largest listed companies at the start of trading was sportswear manufacturer Adidas, increasing by 0.82 percent, followed by German pharmaceutical company Merck with 0.61 percent and online food delivery company Delivery Hero with 0.29 percent.

On Thursday, Merck announced that net sales increased by 9.7 percent year-on-year to 4.4 billion euros (5.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the third quarter (Q3). Merck stressed that "the superb results of the third quarter" once again underscored the strength of the company's business model.

Shares of Siemens fell by 4.31 percent. The German technology giant was the biggest loser at the start of trading on Thursday after announcing that net income declined by about 25 percent year-on-year to 4.2 billion euros (4.96 billion dollars) at the end of the fourth quarter (Q4) of the company's fiscal year.

German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom announced on Thursday that net revenues grew by almost one third year-on-year in Q3 to 26 billion euros (30 billion dollars), "increasing significantly" following a merger with U.S. telecommunications company Sprint.

Consumer prices in Germany in October decreased by 0.2 percent year-on-year, resulting in an inflation rate of minus 0.2 percent, the third time this year that the inflation rate was slightly negative, the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said on Thursday.

The yield on German 10-year bonds went down 0.008 percentage points to minus 0.512 percent, and the euro was trading almost unchanged at 1.1779 U.S. dollars, increasing by 0.01 percent on Thursday morning. Enditem
