VILNIUS, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania on Friday reported 2,066 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in a 24-hour span, the biggest daily spike since the country confirmed its first case on Feb. 28, according to the Health Ministry.

The latest confirmed cases brought the national total to 31,878, including 253 deaths and 7,247 recoveries.

Simonas Krepsta, the chief advisor to the president, said on Thursday that he expected the pandemic in Lithuania would reach its peak in one or two weeks.

"A spike in infections last weekend obviously affected projections, however, at the same time certain peaks can be seen in the horizon. If quarantine conditions remain effective and observed, it is likely that the peak of the pandemic will be reached in 7-14 days," Krepsta was quoted as saying by local news agency Elta.

Lithuania has introduced another nationwide lockdown starting from Nov. 7 to Nov. 29 in a bid to curb the spread of the disease.

The new restrictive measures include a public gathering ban for groups of more than five people, except for family members, and the mandatory use of face masks in all public places with rare exceptions.

According to the World Health Organization, face masks should be used as part of a comprehensive strategy of measures to suppress COVID-19 transmission and save lives.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreaks in early 2020, wearing masks in public has been widely accepted in Asian countries like China, South Korea, Japan and Vietnam to curb the spread of COVID-19. Enditem
