Live COVID-19 updates: Lebanon starts nationwide lockdown amid case surge

BEIJING, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BEIRUT -- Restaurants, bars, cafes, gyms and malls closed their doors on Saturday as Lebanon entered its first day of a two-week lockdown to restrict the spread of COVID-19.

Vehicles are permitted to drive on specific days based on their plate numbers. However, most of the streets in the capital city of Beirut were empty, reported LBCI local TV channel.

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Health Ministry reported on Saturday 2,419 new COVID-19 cases, raising the number of nationwide infections to 516,915.

It also reported 43 new deaths and 2,370 recovered cases, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 11,623 and the total recoveries to 444,226 in the country.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said on Saturday that he decided to donate 2 million face masks and other medical supplies to neighboring Laos to help it combat COVID-19.

"Ministry of Health Secretary of State Youk Sambath will fly the materials to Laos on Monday next week," he was quoted as saying by a Fresh News report.

YANGON -- Myanmar reported 1,277 new confirmed COVID-19 cases with 18 more deaths in the past 24 hours, according to a daily release from the Health Ministry on Saturday.

As of Saturday, the number of COVID-19 infections has risen to 68,011 and the death toll to 1,552, the ministry said.

MINSK -- Belarus reported 1,167 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, taking its total to 112,870, according to the country's health ministry.

There have been 767 new recoveries in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 94,337, the ministry added.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 1,531 new COVID-19 cases and 14 new deaths on Saturday, making the tally at 430,496 and death toll at 6,173, the Directorate General of Health Services said.

The official data showed that 11,795 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

TOKYO -- Japan on Saturday reported 1,733 new COVID-19 cases, renewing a record number of daily infections for the third consecutive day, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities.

The latest rise in cases brought the nation's total cases to 117,261, not including those connected to the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo earlier in the year. Enditem
